Termes is a small rural commune in the Aude department of southern France's Occitanie region, nestled in the rugged Haut-Corbières at about 470 meters amid dramatic gorges of the Termenet, near Carcassonne.
Renowned for its Château de Termes—one of the famed Cathar castles perched on a rocky promontory—it endured a brutal four-month siege in 1210 by Simon de Montfort during the Albigensian Crusade, led by Cathar lord Raymond de Termes, before falling due to disease and supply shortages.
Covering 16,000 m² with remnants of double walls, a citadel, and forward outpost, the site was later reinforced as one of the "five sons of Carcassonne" guarding France, then demolished in 1654 by Louis XIV amid the Fronde, now drawing visitors via a 15-minute hike for excavations, exhibits, and panoramic views.
