Tonquédec Castle is one of Brittany’s most impressive medieval fortresses, standing on a rocky spur above the Léguer Valley near the town of Tonquédec.

The site originated as a fortified stronghold in the 12th century and was largely rebuilt in the 15th century after being destroyed during political conflicts involving the powerful Coëtmen family and the Dukes of Brittany. Known for its massive walls and eleven towers, the castle was expanded and adapted over time to meet changing military needs, including the use of artillery.

During the Wars of Religion, it served as a refuge for Protestants, but it was eventually dismantled in the early 17th century on the orders of Cardinal Richelieu, who sought to reduce the power of regional fortresses. Today, the well-preserved ruins remain one of the most remarkable medieval monuments in Brittany.
