Tour de Moricq

Tour de Moricq is a medieval fortified tower located near the village of Moricq in Angles, Vendée.

The site has been occupied since at least the 11th century, but the present tower was rebuilt around 1435 by Régnault Girard, a prominent nobleman and former mayor of La Rochelle, on the remains of an earlier fortress. Built to oversee the surrounding marshes and protect the nearby port of Moricq, the tower played an important defensive role during the Middle Ages.

Over time, it served various purposes, including a refuge during the Wars of Religion, a prison for Protestants, and later a grain store as the area's economic activities changed. Today, Tour de Moricq is a protected historic monument and one of the most recognizable landmarks in the region. Although weathered by centuries of conflict and neglect, it remains an impressive reminder of Vendée’s medieval past and offers a glimpse into the area's former maritime and military importance.
