Vire
France, France
Vire is a historic town in Normandy’s Calvados department, situated on the River Vire and surrounded by the rolling countryside of the Norman bocage. It has long been an important regional market town and is known for its strong local identity, traditional rural landscapes, and welcoming atmosphere. Founded in the Middle Ages, Vire grew around a fortified castle built to defend the Duchy of Normandy. Remnants of its medieval heritage can still be seen today, including the castle keep, old ramparts, the Porte Horloge gateway, and the Church of Notre-Dame. Much of the town was destroyed during World War II bombing in 1944 and was subsequently rebuilt, combining historic remains with post-war architecture. Today, Vire is especially famous for its traditional smoked sausage, andouille de Vire, as well as its markets, museums, and outdoor activities in the surrounding countryside. Its blend of history, gastronomy, and natural beauty makes it a distinctive and authentic destination in the heart of Normandy.
