Vitré Castle
Vitré, France, France
Vitré Castle is a striking medieval fortress that dominates the historic town of Vitré in Brittany.
Originally built as a wooden castle around the year 1000 and later rebuilt in stone during the late 11th century, it occupies a rocky promontory overlooking the Vilaine Valley, giving it a strong defensive position. The castle took its present triangular shape in the 13th century and was further strengthened and enlarged in the 15th century with impressive towers, drawbridges, and fortified gates.
Over time, it evolved from a military stronghold into a more comfortable noble residence while continuing to play an important role in regional history. Despite periods of decline, fire, and later use as a prison and barracks, the castle was restored in the 19th century and became one of France’s early protected historic monuments. Today, it is one of Brittany’s best-preserved medieval castles and remains a symbol of Vitré’s rich heritage.
