The Ancient Fortress of Aigosthena is one of the best-preserved ancient fortifications in Greece, located near Porto Germeno on the eastern side of the Gulf of Corinth. Built in the second half of the 4th century BC, it protected the ancient port city of Aigosthena and occupied a strategically important position between the sea and the surrounding mountains. The fortress consists of a fortified acropolis connected to the harbor by long defensive walls. It is especially famous for its remarkably well-preserved towers, including a restored southeast tower that is considered one of the finest examples of ancient military architecture in Greece and is open to visitors. The site remained inhabited for many centuries, from Classical Greek times through the Byzantine period, leaving behind remains of early Christian churches and a later monastery. Today, the fortress is a major archaeological attraction, valued for its impressive preservation, historical importance, and beautiful views over the Gulf of Corinth.
