The Tower of Maro is a medieval stone tower located in the village of Dafni in the Visaltia region of northern Greece. Built in 1374 in the Athonite architectural style, it originally served as a fortified residence and is one of the most notable surviving examples of late Byzantine domestic architecture in the area. The tower is traditionally associated with Mara Branković, a Serbian princess who became the wife of Ottoman Sultan Murad II and later settled in the region. According to local tradition, she lived on an estate in the area, and her name became linked to the tower. Although parts of the structure have been damaged over the centuries by neglect, earthquakes, and the reuse of building materials, the tower remains an important protected monument. Today, it stands as a striking reminder of the region’s Byzantine and Ottoman-era history and attracts visitors interested in medieval heritage.
