Sant Paul's Byzantine Tower
Greece, Greece
Saint Paul’s Byzantine Tower is a well-preserved medieval watchtower located in Nea Fokaia on the Kassandra Peninsula of Halkidiki, Greece. Built around 1407, it was constructed to protect lands belonging to the Monastery of Saint Paul on Mount Athos and to monitor the surrounding coastline for possible threats. The stone tower stands prominently above the village harbor and is one of the best-preserved Byzantine towers in the region. During the Greek War of Independence in 1821, it served as the headquarters of revolutionary leader Emmanouel Pappas and was damaged by fire before later being restored. Today, the tower is a major landmark of Nea Fokaia, valued for its historical significance and scenic location overlooking the sea. Visitors come to admire its architecture, learn about its role in Byzantine and Greek history, and enjoy views of the harbor and coastline.
