Arkadi is a historic monastery complex in central Crete, near Rethymno, and is one of the island’s most important cultural and religious landmarks.

Founded around the 11th century and rebuilt in its present form during the 16th century, it is known for its impressive Venetian-inspired architecture, fortified walls, and long tradition as a center of learning and faith. The monastery is most famous for its role in the Cretan revolt against Ottoman rule in 1866. 

During a siege, hundreds of Cretans who had taken refuge there chose to blow up the monastery’s gunpowder store rather than surrender, an act that became a powerful symbol of resistance and the struggle for freedom. Surrounded by olive groves and hills, Arkadi combines historical significance with a peaceful setting.

Visitors can explore the monastery church, museum, former cells, and memorial areas that preserve the memory of its heroic past. Today, Arkadi remains an active Greek Orthodox monastery and a major pilgrimage and tourist destination, widely regarded as a symbol of Cretan identity, sacrifice, and resilience.
