The Castle of Chora Kythira is the island’s most famous fortress, perched on a strategic hilltop above the town of Chora.

Originally established during Venetian rule and largely rebuilt and expanded in the early 16th century, it was known as the “Eye of Crete” because it could monitor sea routes across the Ionian, Aegean, and Cretan seas. The castle served as the administrative and defensive center of Kythira for centuries.

Within its walls were houses, churches, military buildings, reservoirs, prisons, and government offices, creating a fortified community that protected residents from invasions and pirate raids. Today, visitors can explore its historic ruins, chapels, and fortifications while enjoying spectacular panoramic views of Kapsali Bay, the surrounding coastline, and the sea.
