Firka Venetian Fortress is a historic coastal fortress located at the western entrance of Chania’s picturesque Venetian Harbor in Crete.

Built by the Venetians in the early 17th century, it was designed to protect the harbor from attacks and was linked to the lighthouse by a chain that could block enemy ships from entering. During the Ottoman period, the fortress served as military barracks and a prison, which is reflected in its name, “Firka,” a Turkish word referring to a military unit.

The site also holds great national importance because the Greek flag was raised here in 1913 during the official ceremony marking the union of Crete with Greece. Today, Firka Fortress is one of Chania’s most recognizable landmarks. It houses the Maritime Museum of Crete and offers excellent views of the harbor, making it a popular destination for visitors interested in the city’s maritime, Venetian, and modern Greek history.
