The Frankish Castle of Chlemoutsi, also known as Clermont, is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Greece. Built between 1220 and 1223 by the Crusader rulers of the Principality of Achaea, it served as their main military and administrative stronghold in the northwestern Peloponnese. Strategically positioned on a hill overlooking the plains of Elis, the port of Glarentza, and the Ionian Sea, the castle was designed to protect the region and demonstrate Frankish power. Its impressive architecture features a large hexagonal central keep, spacious halls, inner courtyards, and strong defensive walls that remain largely intact today. Over the centuries, Chlemoutsi passed through Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian hands, but it retained much of its original Frankish character. Today, it is one of the most important medieval monuments in Greece, offering visitors a remarkable glimpse into the era of Crusader rule along with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and coastline.
