Monemvasia
Peloponnese, Greece
Monemvasia is a historic fortified town on a small island off the Peloponnese coast, formed by an earthquake in the 4th century AD that separated it from the mainland.
It was first settled by people fleeing invasions during the 6th century and soon developed into a strategic military and commercial center due to its natural defenses and coastal location. Throughout its long history, Monemvasia played a significant role as a naval and trading hub, connecting the Byzantine Empire, Venetians, Franks, and Ottomans, with a rich cultural and economic legacy.
The town endured numerous sieges and invasions but remained important for its maritime influence, especially known for exporting Malvasia wine. It was one of the last Byzantine strongholds and among the first in the Peloponnese to be liberated in Greece’s War of Independence in 1821.
Over time, Monemvasia experienced periods of prosperity and decline, and today it stands as a remarkably preserved medieval fortress town with layers of history visible in its architecture, narrow streets, churches, and massive walls.
