Santorini Caldera
Santorini Island, Greece
The Santorini Caldera was formed about 3,600 years ago during the massive Minoan eruption around 1600 BCE, one of the most powerful volcanic events in history. Originally, Santorini was part of a larger circular island called Strogili, but the eruption caused the central part of the volcano to collapse, creating a large, mostly submerged caldera roughly 12 by 7 kilometers in size with steep cliffs up to 300 meters high.
The eruption expelled enormous amounts of magma and ash, leading to widespread environmental and cultural impacts, including tsunamis and the decline of the Minoan civilization. Over time, volcanic activity produced smaller islands such as Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni in the center of the caldera.
Today, Santorini’s striking horseshoe-shaped caldera, filled with deep blue water, is a dormant but active volcanic complex and a major tourist attraction, admired for its dramatic landscape and geological significance. This caldera is also linked to the Atlantis myth, adding to its allure and mystery.
