Tour Goulas
Emporio, Greece, Greece
Tour Goulas, also known as Goulas Tower, is a historic Venetian-era tower located in the village of Emporio on the island of Santorini. Built during the 15th or 16th century near the medieval fortified settlement known as the Kasteli, it formed part of the village’s defensive system during a period when pirate raids were a constant threat. The tower likely served as both a secure storage place for agricultural products and a refuge for local residents in times of danger. It was originally owned by a local noble family and later became associated with the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian on Patmos. Today, Tour Goulas remains one of the most recognizable medieval landmarks in Emporio. Together with the surrounding Kasteli, it offers visitors a glimpse into Santorini’s defensive architecture and the island’s history beyond its famous volcanic landscapes and beaches.
